The area of Galtellì gained prestige and importance in the Middle Ages when it became the bishopric seat although we have evidence that the area has been inhabited since the Recent Neolithic period (3400-3200 BC).
In recent decades the town has been upgraded and the historic centre renovated; moreover, it is one of the sites of the Grazia Deledda Literary Park. In fact the writer spent a great deal of time in Galtellì and it provided the setting for one of her most important works, Reeds in the Wind.
The goal of the Grazia Deledda Park is to bring the visitor into contact with the writer's works and the social, historic and literary context that characterised them through guided tours, exhibits and sampling of typical local food.
A short distance from the town rise the ruins of the Castle of Pontes that had the task of controlling the road leading to the coast. Its name, which means bridge, derives from the fact that, in the surroundings, there was once an ancient Roman bridge over the river Cedrino although it is no longer visible. When it was built is unknown but it was prabably part of the Roman Age fortifications and then, given to its strategic position, a Juducature castle time.
Tuttavista mount marks the territory of Galtellì with its imposing lime rock. 860 meters high, it is considered a priviliged outlook over the entire Gulf of Orosei on one side, and the valley of the Cedrino River on the other side. Not far from the highest peak, close to which stands a bronze statue of Crucified Christ, the nature offers another characteristic glimpse. Through a very short path in the vegetation, you reach the characteristic natural sculpture Sa preta istampata, a huge rock with a big cicle hole in the middle.
Spending vacations, or even just going for a walk along the streets and the ancient corners of the old town centre in Galtellì, means finding yourself plunged into a space rich of emotions and feelings. Here, the simple way of living the daily life of a community is the ideal chance for those who want to discover and taste the most authentic Sardinia.
